Reconstructing Notre Dame

Location: Columbia Global Centers | Paris, 4 rue de Chevreuse, Paris, 6e

Tomas van Houtryve is an award-winning artist, photographer, and filmmaker whose major works, interweaving investigative journalism, philosophy and metaphor, are in the collections of museums around the world. He was selected to document the reconstruction of Notre Dame after the fire of 2019. With rare access to the rebuilding, he made images using a wide range of techniques: 19th-century wet plate collodion, traditional photo reportage, and aerial drone videography. His resulting photos appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine and as a special featured series and will be displayed as an outdoor exhibit framing the Notre Dame construction site beginning in March 2023. He will speak to us about the experience of documenting the reconstruction and give us an avant premiere of the photos that will be displayed next month.
