For the 10th year, the Arts Arena presents L’Europe autour de l’Europe European film festival.

This year’s selection is Life Crime, a philosophical/political documentary by NC Heikin that asks the question, “What is a just punishment?” Through the personal story of Reggie Austin, a gifted jazz musician convicted of second-degree murder, this superb documentary uses stunning musical performances, rare vérité from inside San Quentin prison, and scenes of raw emotion adjusting to life outside, to confront the very present-day issues of mass incarceration, inequitable sentencing and parole practices, and racism in America’s system of justice.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session.

Founded in 2006 by Irena Bilic, L’Europe autour de l’Europe presents art films produced by the countries of Greater Europe with special attention to connections between classic European filmmakers and new talents of contemporary cinema. Among the festival’s guests of honor have been Agnès Varda, Carlos Saura, Jean-Claude Carrière, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Dušan Hanák, Jonas Mekas, and Márta Mészáros.
