BATTERY DANCE ART ACTIVATION

For its first post-pandemic New York Season in 2022, Battery Dance challenged three choreographers from the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America – Saeed Hani, Tsai Hsi Hung, and Christopher “Unpezverde” Núñez – to respond through dance to the paintings and practice of the “father of abstract expressionism,” the German artist Hans Hofmann, one of the 20th century’s most influential painters. Jonathan Hollander, a member of the Arts Arena’s Advisory Council, will speak about the integration of visual art and contemporary dance as he presents videos of the three ensuing choreographies that embody Hofmann’s poetic imagery, groundbreaking painting techniques, and use of brilliant color. A coupe de champagne will follow.
